Harris (Na Hearadh in Scottish Gaelic pronounced [nə hɛɾəɣ]) is the southern part of the largest island of the Western Isles of Scotland or Outer Hebrides (Na h-Eileanan Siar) It is one of the most beautiful of Scottish islands with its spectacular scenery and unspoilt atmosphere. Of all the beaches on South Harris, Luskentyre and Scarista are considered by many to be among some of the most spectacular on the British Isles. From Luskentyre, the island of Taransay, where the BBC Television series Castaway 2000 was recorded, is seen most clearly.
For wildlife lovers otters, seals, eagles, deer and dolphins can often be seen and in the summer months there are many colourful wild flowers to be seen on the machair. The Isle of Harris was a favoured haunt for many writers, including J.M. Barrie (Peter Pan) and Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins (The Prisoner of Zenda). Barrie was inspired to write his Hebridean ghost story Mary Rose on the island. While staying in Harris he carved his initials into the window at The Harris Hotel which and are now on display in the hotel.
